Glycated hemoglobin (glycohemoglobin, HbA1c, hemoglobin A1c, A1c, or less commonly HbA 1c, HgbA1c, Hb1c, etc.) is a form of hemoglobin (Hb) that is chemically linked to a sugar. Most monosaccharides, including glucose, galactose and fructose, spontaneously (i.e. non-enzymatically) bond with hemoglobin, when present in the bloodstream of humans. The A1C test is also called the glycated hemoglobin, glycosylated hemoglobin, hemoglobin A1C or HbA1c test. An A1C test result reflects your average blood sugar level for the past two to three months.

A 1% change in an A1c result reflects a change of about 30 mg/dL (1.67 mmol/L) in average blood glucose.
